Only Time Will Tell: Unraveling the Temporal Effect of Negative Affective Encounters in Diaspora Tourism

Recently, researchers have begun to investigate the role of negative encounters, emotions and feelings in tourism leisure activities. However, temporal effects encounters are still underexplored. This research consists two studies that were conducted longitudinally. Study one investigated overall visiting experience 50 multi-generational Chinese diaspora tourists; study interviewed 22 former participants who touched on experiences their ancestral hometown eight years ago. Three scenarios how these tourists re-interpreted affective identified. The findings suggest tourists’ perceptions transform over time, depending life trajectory, earlier experiences, attitudes, further exposures culture values, meanings they obtained from encounters. is among first examine longitudinally, opening up for future considerations contingencies experience.
